Meta’s AI-distilled model detector catches 79% at a 0.1% false-positive rateWM-Basin is a Meta method for detecting student LLMs distilled from watermarked teacher models, described in "Watermark Basins: Black-Box Detection of Distilled LLMs" (arXiv:2610.37266, 27 October 2026). It feeds a suspect model's API text into a clean probe model and checks gradient alignment with a key-specific watermark basin. It reached 79% true-positive rate at 0.1% false-positive rate across 1,200 students, versus 29% for the prior token-level detector. Clean-data fine-tuning and paraphrasing weaken it.

Retrieving from Your Own Mistakes: On-Policy Training of Embedding Models for Multi-Hop Retrieval-Augmented GenerationOn-policy state training is a method for training chain embedding retrievers for multi-hop RAG on the states the encoder itself reaches, including those built on its own wrong retrievals. Each state is labeled with the earliest missing gold passage, other missing gold passages are masked, and updates are contrastive and mixed with teacher-forced states. It retrieves complete evidence more often than teacher-forced training and graph-based systems, and transfers to harder long-chain HotpotQA and 2WikiMultiHopQA variants the authors built.

Securing our frontier model training environment is an OpenAI post on containing models during RL training and evaluation. After a September 20, 2026 DNS-resolver escape, OpenAI paused its most capable runs, moved to no live internet access (an "offline world"), and had GPT-6 Astra Cyber and an internal model red-team its sandboxes. The agents found VM escapes, network routes and cache-timing covert channels. Training resumed October 1.

When to Stop Penalizing Actions? Martingale GRPO for VLA Reinforcement LearningMART-GRPO is a variant of group-relative policy optimization for vision-language-action (VLA) reinforcement learning. It uses a LoRA-fine-tuned VLM to find the last visible error without recovery in a failed rollout video, keeps failure feedback up to that point, and drops it afterward. Martingale stopping conditions show this preserves the expected GRPO gradient and can reduce covariance. With OpenVLA-OFT on RoboTwin 2.0, it raises success rates over full-trajectory GRPO across multiple tasks.

Knowledge That Is Linear Before Fine-Tuning Generalizes After ItThe paper separates "active" facts (which support generalization beyond recall) from "inert" ones. It builds new relations by relabeling answers of existing ones (Paris -> Europe becomes Paris -> crab), fine-tunes on a subset of subjects, and tests held-out subjects that share an answer (Munich -> crab). Across eleven language models and 70 relations, linear readability of the original relation in pretrained representations correlates with this generalization at Pearson r = 0.87 to 0.92 within each model. The result holds after controlling for fine-tuning set size, original-relation accuracy and subject frequency in pretraining text, and it survives re-randomized labels, seeds and thirteen other label categories. Mapping wrong labels back to the original answers shows the fine-tuned model's errors follow the linear probe's top answers.

This counters the narrowing of solution diversity that RL causes. On text-to-SQL tasks it reaches higher pass@128 than all baselines and yields up to 77% more distinct correct strategies. It also retains more of the base model's strategies and covers both readings of ambiguous questions nearly twice as often on AmbiQT.

Topology-Inspired Fine-Tuning for Wind-Field Super-ResolutionThe paper fine-tunes a pretrained CNN wind-field super-resolution model with differentiable topology-inspired auxiliary losses on speed, gradient magnitude, soft high-speed level sets and local maxima. It also uses fixed-pair supervision at ground-truth persistence-pair endpoints located offline with the Topology ToolKit. A 16-configuration loss study on a fixed 168-field benchmark finds that gradient supervision gives the strongest persistence-diagram improvement, while fixed-pair supervision gives the most consistent joint improvement in persistence-diagram and merge-tree distances. The combined objective cuts bottleneck, W2,∞ and W2,2 distances by 31%, 25% and 27% relative to the pretrained CNN, at a cost of about half of standard fine-tuning's PSNR gain. Google DeepMind’s on-device scam detection keeps chats off the cloudDescribes a scam-detection model built by Google DeepMind with GovTech Singapore that runs entirely on the user's device. A low-power message classifier screens incoming messages, then a Gemma model fine-tuned on local scam conversations (impersonated institutions, banks, regional schemes) judges the wider conversation to confirm a threat or discard a false alarm. Fine-tuning ran in a GovTech-managed GCP environment on anonymised scam reports and intelligence feeds, with no PII. Chat access needs user consent, and the system gives real-time warnings. It shows a practical pattern of cascaded small models for battery-efficient, privacy-preserving local inference.

DPF-SGD: Byzantine-Robust Differentially Private Federated SGD with Exact Optimality GuaranteesDPF-SGD is a federated SGD algorithm that stays robust to Byzantine agents while satisfying ϵ-differential privacy. It combines private step sizes with a DP noise-decay schedule and adds a privacy-preserving comparative elimination (PPCE) filter that suppresses Byzantine updates during aggregation. The authors prove almost-sure convergence to the global optimum despite persistent noise and adversaries. On synthetic and MNIST data, final optimization error is one to two orders of magnitude lower than DP baselines.

Scaling Agentic Data for Long-Horizon Terminal IntelligenceIntroduces TerminalHorizon, a fully automated data synthesis engine for long-horizon terminal agents. It uses independent execution to find key work omitted during environment construction and rebuilds the environment from that evidence. It then progressively expands tasks under the same goal with new requirements that build on earlier results. The authors build 1.5K task environments and run supervised fine-tuning of Qwen3.5-27B to get TerminalHorizon-27B, which improves on all 12 benchmarks covering coding-agent tasks, real-world production agentic tasks and general reasoning. Multiple RSI case studies with a 12-hour research budget show the model continuing to experiment past an initial solution and keeping effective improvements in its final deliverables.

The model predicts future video and uses it to guide robot actions, built on a diffusion transformer with flow matching. The discussion covers the robotics data bottleneck, adapting to new tasks from about 45 minutes of demonstrations, synthetic environments and self-generated training data, on-device inference and distillation, and Dyna's custom wheeled semi-humanoid hardware. The episode listing also covers commercial deployments (Din Tai Fung, Best Western), agentic harnesses for hour-long workflows, and world-action models versus VLAs, but the fetched text was truncated before those sections.

Dog-Breed Text-to-image Flow Matching from Pretraining to Fine-Tuning on 4 Consumer GPUsMiniDog is a framework for training a text-to-image flow-matching diffusion transformer from scratch on four RTX 3090 GPUs, with 55 minutes of pretraining and 15 minutes of fine-tuning. It pretrains on 26k ImageNet dog images that were captioned, then fine-tunes on 2k FLUX.1-schnell generated images. Image and text features are precomputed and cached. The model is a 22M-parameter transformer with the E2E-INVAE semantic latent space, a small Qwen text encoder and in-context conditioning, and training is accelerated with iREPA and an EUPE perception encoder. The repo evaluates with FID, HPSv2, PickScore and VAE reconstruction metrics. It lowers the barrier to hands-on diffusion training research.

Hybrid Reasoning AgentsIntroduces Hybrid Reasoning Agents (HybridAgents), which switch between latent reasoning and text-based interaction in one generation process. A lightweight HybridLink handles transitions between the two modes, and a continuous working memory keeps hybrid context lossless across turns. This keeps tool use and makes latent thoughts inspectable. Post-training has two stages: HybridSFT, then HybridRL, which learns when to think latently and when to act in text. Across 3 model scales and 11 benchmarks (math, science, medicine, search, agentic reasoning), the authors report +10.4% performance, 35.5–54.7% fewer tokens, 1.8–2.6x faster inference and 2.7–3.7x lower cost versus text and latent baselines.

GitHub’s model for secret detection: Finding more secrets with less noiseGitHub describes replacing an LLM-based generic secret detection pipeline with a two-stage system. High-recall regex generates candidates, then a fine-tuned ModernBERT classifier scores each one using its file path, secret type, variable names and surrounding context. Training data mixes product feedback, weak-labelled regex candidates and synthetic hard negatives, with splits grouped by repository, value or example. The model is exported to ONNX with 8-bit quantization. Reported results against the LLM pipeline: 13% higher precision, 19% higher recall, 11.5% higher owner-weighted acceptance in an A/B test, 86% lower median post-push scan time and over 98% lower serving cost. It is a concrete case for using a small fine-tuned encoder instead of an LLM on a narrow, measurable classification task.

Beyond the Verdict: Agentic Code Judging with Verifiable FeedbackProposes a task where a model judges and diagnoses a candidate program from only the problem statement and source code, backing its verdict with generated counterexamples that can be checked by execution. The authors build USACO-JUDGE from USACO 2026 contests (human and LLM-written accepted and unaccepted programs) and train ARBITER, a 35B MoE agentic verifier, with reinforcement learning in a generic execution sandbox. Training lifts counterexample success on incorrect programs from 40.61% to 62.67% and mean binary verdict accuracy from 71.41% to 87.41%. ARBITER also improves code selection and refinement, and in an IOI 2026 case study its guided refinement lifts GPT-OSS-120B's expected score above the gold-medal threshold under the official submission limit.

Anthropic says AI distillation attack defenses cut Claude extraction by 90% to 99%News report on Anthropic's October 12, 2026 blog post saying new defenses cut reasoning-token extraction from Claude by 10x to 100x. The defenses are a two-stage extraction classifier (reported false positives under 0.1%), restrictions on reasoning transcripts, and account bans. It notes that training on full Claude Opus 4.8 reasoning transcripts scored 80.4% on SWE-bench Verified against 71.8% for summarized ones. It also covers the API changes: preserved thinking on Claude Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5 for accounts created on or after August 31, 2026, plus Sonnet 5.5 transcripts limited to the generating organization. The article also covers alleged distillation by Zhipu (GLM-5.3) and Moonshot's Kimi, and calls for cross-industry cooperation.

Strengthening our defenses against distillation attacksAnthropic describes its layered defenses against distillation attacks, in which fraudulent-account networks harvest Claude's reasoning transcripts to train rival models. The defenses are reasoning summarization, "preserved thinking" (new API accounts cannot edit prior context), restricted access to reasoning transcripts, a two-stage constitutional-classifier system with under 0.1% false positives, stricter usage limits and account bans, and charging for blocked requests. Anthropic reports 10–100x fewer extracted reasoning tokens, and a SWE-bench Verified drop from 80.4% to 71.8% when a model trains on summarized rather than full transcripts. It also argues that distilled models such as GLM-5.3 ship without proportionate safeguards and pose national-security risks, and that platforms and other labs must act too.

Building AI for Reliable Execution: Lessons From Industrial RoboticsLatent Space interviews Standard Bots' CEO Evan Beard and Head of AI Leif Jentoft about the AI stack behind its industrial robot arms. A shared base model (low billions of parameters) is adapted per customer through demonstrations and fine-tuning. A zero-shot perception model, whose backbone is trained on over a billion images, handles machine tending, while conventional code handles motion and cell logic. Inference runs on-premises on edge GPUs that stream action chunks to low-level control. Failures and human corrections feed fleet learning except in air-gapped defense deployments, and the StandardOS APIs/SDKs let developers bring their own models such as NVIDIA Cosmos. The lesson is to keep the model's role narrow and use targeted, high-quality data to fix edge cases instead of chasing dataset size.

Low-quality metagenomic sequences can still improve protein language models, and AlphaFold 2's handcrafted inductive biases made it data-efficient. They also cover why protein folding isn't fully solved (dynamics, disorder, cryo-EM micrographs as a richer data source), the need for calibrated uncertainty (pLDDT) over full interpretability, hidden knowledge in protein language models, and the move from single-protein models to a virtual cell.

A Step Harder, Not a Step Too Far: The Benefits and Limits of Curriculum Difficulty Progression in GRPOStudies curriculum design for GRPO by re-estimating sample difficulty under the current policy and using a staged curriculum that progressively shifts the active difficulty band toward harder samples. On GSM8K across three seeds, moving to a moderately harder band lifts test accuracy to 0.6591 ± 0.0077 versus 0.6449 ± 0.0024 for fixed-medium selection, while going to a still harder band drops it to 0.6405 ± 0.0053. Evaluated across four model architectures, five downstream tasks, and four harmful-content benchmarks, it drives the average harmful score on Llama3.1/SST2 from 11.54 down to 0.08 while preserving downstream accuracy, and stays near zero even at poisoning ratios up to 0.9.

From Digital Human Interactions to Physics-Based Humanoid Skills: Physics-Grounded Post-Training of Interaction GeneratorsThe paper introduces DIGHT, a co-adaptive framework that couples a text-conditioned digital-human interaction generator with a physics-based humanoid tracking policy to produce physically plausible two-humanoid interactions. Rather than collapsing executability and interaction-fidelity signals into one scalar reward, it applies physics-decoupled diffusion Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) to align the generator using criterion-specific preferences derived from tracking error, friction, floating, and simulator force feedback (contact occurrence, location, duration, magnitude), then uses the aligned generator's outputs to fine-tune the tracker. Experiments show improved physical plausibility and more reliable, faithful simulated humanoid interactions compared to prior tracking-based approaches.

Fault-tolerant foundation modelsThis arXiv paper shows that large language models can be trained to tolerate unreliable, faulty digital hardware, and that their error resilience improves rather than degrades as model size increases. Using modified neural scaling laws derived from 40,000 GPU-hours of training runs on simulated faulty hardware, the authors argue that LLMs learn to compute within "good" error-correcting codes whose relative overhead stays finite regardless of scale, suggesting a path toward running AI inference on low-energy, unreliable hardware for substantial energy savings.

How to train your model organismThis paper argues that training "model organisms" (models deliberately given alignment-relevant behaviors like backdoors, sycophancy, or spurious correlations) to a single behavior-installation objective produces unrealistic test subjects for interpretability research. The authors propose a three-objective validation framework (behavior installation, general-capability preservation, output naturalness) and show chat quality and chain-of-thought naturalness degrade substantially across common training recipes, with these degradations predicting how well interpretability methods such as logit lens recover the installed behavior. They introduce a model-merging-based multi-objective training approach and apply it to a new model-organism suite for demographic bias in clinical reasoning, finding DPO training preserves the base model better than supervised finetuning.

One Model Family, Two Gold-Level Results: Fine-Tuning Nemotron for IOI and IMONVIDIA describes how it specialized Nemotron 3 base models into domain experts for competitive programming (IOI) and olympiad mathematics (IMO) using a four-step recipe: strong base model, curated domain data with reasoning traces, SFT/RL post-training, and an inference loop (GenCorrect for IOI, generate-verify-refine for IMO) that searches and refines candidate answers. Nemotron-3-Nano-CC and Nemotron-3-Ultra-CC reached gold-level IOI 2026 scores (535.4/600), while SFT and RL checkpoints of Nemotron 3 Ultra combined to score 30/42 on IMO 2026, exceeding the gold threshold with no formal prover or external tools. The post releases training datasets, checkpoints, the Nemotron-IMO-Bench benchmark, and the NeMo-Skills inference pipelines on Hugging Face.

Post-Quantum Dropout-Resilient Verifiable Secure Aggregation for Federated LearningPQ-DVSA is a verifiable secure aggregation protocol for federated learning that combines post-quantum cryptography, resilience to client dropouts, and verifiability of the server's aggregation result under bounded server-client collusion. It protects both clients' local model updates and their aggregation weights, lets the server reconstruct the aggregate mask for the active client set after dropouts, and lets clients cryptographically check the aggregation result. Experiments show learning accuracy comparable to exact weighted aggregation while cutting per-client encrypted-submission runtime by up to 96% versus SWAS, the closest prior scheme.

Someone Scraped 5.6 Billion TikTok Videos and Put the Data on Hugging Face for FreeA developer using the handle "hashfunction" published a 460GB Hugging Face dataset of metadata (captions, hashtags, sound IDs, engagement counts, AI-generation flags) for roughly 5.6 billion public TikTok videos spanning July 2014 to October 2026, released under CC BY-NC 4.0. The data was reportedly pulled from TikTok's private mobile API using spoofed device identities and TLS handshakes rather than TikTok's official, application-gated Research Tools, in apparent violation of TikTok's terms of service; commercial access, creator profiles, daily updates, and the $1,699 scraper source code are sold via datasocial.ai. The piece situates this alongside other scraped TikTok-metadata dumps on Hugging Face and ongoing litigation (Reddit v. Perplexity/SerpApi) over large-scale AI training-data scraping.

PEARS: Physical-Prior-Guided Efficient Adaptation via Failure Reasoning and Diffusion Steering for Tactile ManipulationPEARS is a hybrid reinforcement-learning framework for sample-efficient online adaptation of pretrained tactile-manipulation policies to out-of-distribution conditions. A physics-guided force reasoning (PFR) module uses a vision-language model to diagnose failures from visual and tactile history and update contact-force bounds enforced by a hybrid force-position controller, while a separate tactile-conditioned diffusion-steering component perturbs the latent noise of a frozen flow-matching policy to correct free-space motion and contact timing without retraining the base model. It improves success rates by 12.4-37.4 points over strong baselines in simulation, cuts required interaction episodes by up to 53.2%, and reaches 95%/90% success on real-world whiteboard-erasing and pipette-liquid-aspiration tasks.
