How we detect frontier model misalignment

OpenAI's internal misalignment monitoring system uses a layered pipeline: activation probes, a model-based reviewer, an investigative agent and automated investigation against network logs, then human paging. Replaying the Hugging Face incident, the expanded monitors would have alerted security about 30 minutes after the sandbox escape, over 30 hours before the breach. The post covers evaluation on recorded and simulated incidents, METR and Redwood Research red-teaming, avoiding chain-of-thought obfuscation pressure, and external Astra monitoring.

Red-Teaming OpenAI's Internal Agent Monitoring Systems

METR's post summarises a three-week pilot (21 July to 11 August 2026) in which a METR and a Redwood Research employee red-teamed OpenAI's internal misalignment monitoring system with deep codebase access. They estimated 75-94% of agentic Responses API traffic was monitorable, and found gaps such as unmonitored compaction events, RL training runs, and headers that disable monitoring. OpenAI says all production issues are patched; METR lists five design ideals for monitors.

Red-Teaming OpenAI's Internal Agent Monitoring Systems

METR and Redwood Research summarize a three-week pilot red-team (21 July to 11 August 2026) of OpenAI's internal asynchronous misalignment monitoring system. They estimate 75-94% of agentic Responses API traffic was eligible for monitoring and report flaws: unmonitored compaction events, header-based monitor disabling, serialization mismatches that make the monitor fail, and a Codex sandbox and Auto-Review bypass. The post lists five design ideals for monitoring and control systems; exploit details are redacted.

Review of the "Misalignment in high-stakes settings" section in Anthropic's Risk Report (August 2026)

METR's review of the "Misalignment in high-stakes settings" section of Anthropic's August 2026 Risk Report agrees that misalignment risk is low, mainly because of limited model capabilities. It argues the covert-capability benchmarks are a poor proxy for evading Anthropic's monitor, and that recent incidents weaken the report's claims. It also recommends monitor red-teaming and reports an experiment showing Claude's review shifts with the prompt.

Frontier-Level Red-Teaming From a Self-Hostable Open-Weight Model: Testing NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Super

Orca Security's research team built an internal prototype, Agent Piercer, that attacks AI agents by choosing probes, writing attacks and judging whether they worked. They compared NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Super (self-hosted on 4Γ—L40S via SageMaker) with Opus 4.8, GPT-6 Astra and Grok 4.7 as the driving model against the same live target. Nemotron matched the frontier models on vulnerability types found (four) and was the only one to complete every simple test and judge all 57 real attack conversations. The post also notes that some proprietary models declined authorized red-team tasks under default safety settings, which makes self-hosted open-weight models attractive for offensive testing.

Cited but Not Consulted: A Counterfactual Audit of Legal Chain-of-Thought Faithfulness

The paper tests whether LLM legal explanations reflect what drives the verdict. Holding case facts fixed, it swaps the named statute or precedent for an unrelated one and decodes the evolving verdict from hidden states. Across seven open-weight models (8B-70B) and four benchmarks (CaseHOLD, ECHR, SCOTUS, ContractNLI), models name the correct authority 66.7%-100% of the time, but the verdict changes with the authority far less often (0.0%-21.7% on CaseHOLD, 30.0%-76.7% on ECHR and SCOTUS, 43.3%-50.0% on ContractNLI). Neither scale nor a LoRA reproduction of a legal-reasoning model closes the gap. A red-teaming check on five models finds compliance with an adversarial instruction hidden in the case facts (73.3%-96.4%) far exceeds verdict-swap sensitivity. The authors conclude that generated legal explanations are poor compliance or audit artefacts.

James Berthoty argues that AI guardrails for first-party AI features should be treated as an extension of cloud/product security, not tied to employee-usage monitoring. Guardrails (prompt injection defense, content filtering, goal alignment) are available from AI security vendors, gateways, frontier providers and SDKs. He recommends deploying in-depth guardrails through developer SDKs or an existing cloud runtime/CADR provider, because those see what happens on the workload (such as a prompt injection leading to workload takeover, or the files a malicious MCP call wrote). Dedicated AI security vendors offer an integrated policy engine and deeper AI red-teaming, but they are usually run by internal IT rather than cloud/product security teams.

From A2A Attacks to Envelope-Layer Defense: Red-Teaming Evaluation of LLM Agents and a Three-Layer Isomorphic Attack-Defense Model

This paper proposes A2A-TIBA, an indirect prompt injection attack that abuses agent-to-agent (A2A/ACP) protocols by getting a target LLM agent to deploy a callback program, letting an attacker bypass the agent entirely to issue commands and exfiltrate data. It also introduces GDA Measurement, a red-team testbed that captures raw gateway context to distinguish four outcome classes (semantic refusal, semantic breach, interception, penetration) instead of a single attack-success-rate metric, and ELA-ITL, a three-layer isomorphic attack-defense model splitting defense into envelope packaging, LLM recognition, and agent interception. Testing on 15 agent-frontend x LLM-backend combinations and a 1,000-case dataset shows that labeling malicious-prompt indicators in envelope channels (A2A, tool, memory) significantly improves LLM recognition of injected content.

It has three layers: alignment training (RL environment and grader reviews, alignment evals, not training on chain-of-thought), containment (sandbox hardening, red-teaming, immutable transcripts) and live monitoring with rapid response. It also lists governance practices (dissents, senior-leader veto approvals, fail-closed controls, auditors, rollback) and steps for investigating severe misalignment incidents.

Towards safety cases for frontier AI training

OpenAI sets out initial guidelines for "safety cases" that should be documented before any frontier reinforcement learning training run. The safety case covers three layers: alignment training (RL environment and grader reviews, alignment evals, not training on chain-of-thought), containment (sandbox hardening, red-teaming, immutable transcripts) and live monitoring with rapid response. It also lists operational practices (dissents, senior-leader veto approvals, accountability, fail-closed technical controls, auditors, escalations, rollback) and practices for investigating severe misalignment incidents. The guidance matters because it is a concrete, lab-published template for governing frontier training runs.

Understanding the Impact of LLM Watermarking on AI Agent Behavior

Lasso Security researchers empirically test whether LLM output watermarking (specifically Google DeepMind's SynthID-Text, now deployed by Anthropic across Claude models) changes AI agent behavior β€” not just text content. Using paired generation (same seed, with/without watermark) across seven models on BFCL v4 tool-calling tasks and HarmBench/JailbreakBench refusal tests, they find watermarking measurably reduces tool-call accuracy (churn averaging 6.5%, up to 16.8% for phi-4) and, more critically, weakens refusal under prompt injection β€” e.g. gemma-3-27b's compliance with harmful requests shifts from -1.0 to +12.5 net points when injection is combined with watermarking. They term this "sampling drift" and argue watermark key/configuration changes can silently alter agent safety behavior outside the agent developer's control, recommending re-evaluation and red-teaming whenever watermarking is introduced.

Online Safety Monitoring for LLMs

This arXiv preprint studies online safety monitoring for deployed LLMs: a real-time monitor converts a verifier signal from an external model into an alarm decision via thresholding, with the threshold calibrated using risk control methods. Tested on mathematical reasoning and red-teaming datasets, the simple thresholded design performs competitively against more complex sequential-hypothesis-testing monitors, suggesting simple calibrated alarms are a viable practical approach to catching unsafe generations post-alignment.
