GitHub Universe 2026: Evolving every layer of the stack
GitHub Universe 2026 recap in which GitHub presents its agentic software delivery vision and new Copilot products: the Copilot app, Copilot Fusion multi-model routing, Copilot projects, session continuity, automations that learn from outcomes, and code review Max. GitHub Enterprise customers can use all Copilot features without a separate subscription. GitHub also reports added capacity, a multi-region Azure migration and a redesigned Git architecture.
What it claims
Jay Parikh, Executive Vice President of CoreAI at Microsoft, presents GitHub as an "agentic software delivery system" in this GitHub Universe 2026 post. The post gives two benchmark claims. Copilot Fusion's Max tier scored within two points of Opus 5.5 Max on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, at half the cost and 40% less time per task. Copilot code review Max posted the highest F1 score on ReviewBench for high-severity issues. Parikh also forecasts that all software written to date will be less than 1% of what gets written in the next five years.
How it works
Copilot Fusion assesses what a task needs across reasoning, code generation, debugging and tool use. It then runs the task on one or more models. Code review comes in three tiers: Lite and Balanced for everyday reviews, and Max for changes that need deeper review.
Copilot projects run agent work across multiple repositories in managed, parallel sessions, tracked from the Copilot app. Session continuity lets one cloud agent session be started and steered from the GitHub app, VS Code, the CLI and github.com while the agent keeps running in the cloud.
Copilot automations are repo-level workflows that run in the cloud. They start manually, on an event or on a schedule, for tasks such as issue triage and code review. They can now propose improvements based on past outcomes, and a human reviews and approves each proposal before it applies.
Evidence
The Fusion figure has a named baseline (Opus 5.5 Max) and a named benchmark, but the post gives no absolute scores. The code review claim is relative ("highest F1"). It gives no score, no list of competitors and no scores for the Lite or Balanced tiers.
Infrastructure added so far in 2026 is 4 million CPU cores, 160 PB of high-speed storage and 50 Tb/s of network capacity. GitHub expects to finish its multi-region Azure migration in early 2027. The new Git architecture follows three principles: simplify the primitives, decouple storage from compute, and minimize coordination. The post gives no performance numbers for it.
How to use it
GitHub Enterprise customers can use all Copilot features, including the Copilot app, code review and automations, without a separate Copilot subscription. They pay for the AI credits they use. Access is through GitHub Sales now, and self-serve is "coming soon." Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise customers can keep their current plans or switch when ready. Copilot projects are available in the Copilot app from launch day. The post names Cloudflare, Datadog and Figma as integrations that keep working.
Limits
The post is a keynote recap. It gives no AI credit prices, no rate limits, no list of models behind Fusion, and no release dates beyond Copilot projects and the Enterprise pricing change. It also says nothing about automation learning beyond the approve-before-apply step. GitHub ran both benchmark claims itself and gives no methodology. The Azure migration is still in progress.
