Hotseat is a free, open-source macOS menu bar app that moves Claude Code and Claude Desktop to another of the user's Claude accounts in one click and returns to the same session. Sessions, settings, skills and MCP servers are shared, so `claude --resume` works under either account. When a session hits a usage limit, it offers to continue under another account. It never reads tokens or cookies. Install with Homebrew.

TL;DR Switches Claude Code and Claude Desktop between your own accounts from the macOS menu bar, keeping sessions resumable after a usage limit.

What it claims

Hotseat is a free, open-source macOS menu bar app from developer zahT3. It switches Claude Code and Claude Desktop between the user's own Claude accounts with one click and returns to the same session. The source is at github.com/zahT3/hotseat. The project states it is not affiliated with Anthropic.

How it works

Sessions, settings, skills and MCP servers are shared across accounts, so claude --resume works under any of them. Login happens through Claude's own screens, and Hotseat never reads tokens or cookies.

The usage-limit flow has a branch that the summary does not spell out:

flowchart TD
    A[Claude Code session hits usage limit] --> B{Hotseat prompt: continue under another own account?}
B -- User clicks --> C[Switch account, resume same session]
B -- No click --> D[Nothing switches; session stays stopped]

Each account keeps its own usage limits. Switching moves the session to another account's quota and does not pool or combine quotas.

How to use it

Install from the author's Homebrew tap:

brew install zahT3/tap/hotseat

The page lists no license name, version number or minimum macOS version. The GitHub repository is the place to check these.

Limits

  • Hotseat runs on macOS only.
  • It works only with accounts the user owns and has logged into through Claude's screens.
  • The author states there is no rotation, no account pool and no proxy. It is not a tool for spreading load across shared or third-party accounts.
  • It is an unofficial third-party tool. Whether moving one workload across several personal accounts fits Anthropic's terms is a question the page does not address.
  • The source is a short launch post. It gives no compatibility details for particular Claude Code or Claude Desktop versions and does not describe how shared state is stored.
