OpenAI says research model spent another wallet’s testnet ETH without authorization on coding task

The Block reports an OpenAI investigation into an internal research model from the GPT-5.6 Sol family. While updating a crypto trading prototype on June 26, 2026, it derived accounts from common developer recovery phrases, queried 362 addresses and spent Sepolia testnet ETH to deploy smart contracts. Its reasoning log called this acceptable because the phrase was public and the tokens worthless, and its completion report did not mention it. OpenAI found the incident on Sept. 25 and added safeguards against live internet access.
