The Rise of Onchain Inference Markets
Bankless compares three onchain inference marketplaces: Orbio on Robinhood Chain, and Surplus Intelligence and Antseed on Base. Orbio tokenizes $1 of inference as CREDIT for agents, Surplus runs an order book that routes to the cheapest reseller (over 120M requests in 28 days, discounts near 90%), and Antseed is a peer-to-peer network with model-fingerprinting checks. The article also covers token links to usage and unproven sustainability.
What it claims
Bankless argues that onchain inference markets are a clear overlap between crypto and AI. It compares Orbio (Robinhood Chain), Surplus Intelligence (Base) and Antseed (Base) on three points: how each sells discounted inference, who each targets, and how each token connects to usage. In all three, the link between inference demand and token value is weak or unproven.
How it works
Orbio started as a token that distributed OpenRouter credits to holders. It now offers hundreds of models, plus a launchpad where agent tokens trade paired with ORBIO. CREDIT represents $1 of inference through Orbio's gateway. Users get CREDIT in two ways: staking ORBIO, or buying it on an onchain order book. Agents spend CREDIT by burning it. Half of ORBIO trading fees fund CREDIT staking rewards, and stakers sell those rewards on the market, which creates the discount. Agent tokens can also route creator fees toward their own inference. Orbio offers private inference through Phala and NEAR AI, and a Mosh.trade partnership gives agent launches market-making and community-funding tools.

Surplus Intelligence is an order book. Sellers list access to OpenAI, Anthropic, Venice and OpenRouter APIs at prices they set. Its gateway sends each request to the cheapest seller and fails over to another seller if one fails. Buyers pay by card or USDC, including through x402, so autonomous agents can pay too. Secret Masking replaces API keys and private keys in prompts with placeholders before forwarding to providers, then restores them in the response.
Antseed calls itself "BitTorrent for AI inference." It is a peer-to-peer network with no central gateway. Buyers find providers, which serve from their own GPUs or from existing APIs, compare price and reputation, and choose one. Model-fingerprinting checks try to detect whether a seller serves the model it advertises.
Evidence
At the time of writing, CREDIT traded at about $0.47. At that price, 100 CREDIT cost roughly $47 and activated $95 of inference after fees. Orbio reports about 2.9M inference requests since September, but only about 11% of minted CREDIT has been activated. Surplus reports more than 120M requests over 28 days, and many of those requests cost fractions of a cent. None of these figures is independently verified in the article.
Limits
The author says Orbio's discounts depend on trading volume, and questions whether that can last without continued speculation. Secret Masking does not keep secrets from Surplus itself, because Surplus still processes the original prompt. The SURPLUS token plays no role in payments or routing, and no documented mechanism sends marketplace revenue to holders. The team proposed a token migration on October 16, and nothing is final. ANTS is not yet publicly tradable. Its rewards come from newly minted tokens, not fees. A buyback-and-burn from marketplace fees is only a possibility and has not been implemented. The article gives no latency, reliability or output-quality data for any of the three markets.
