[AINews] Modal’s $1B ARR, $16B Series D makes it NYC’s newest AI Infra Decacorn, 3x usage and 3x valuation in 5 months, 15x in 1 yr

Latent Space's AINews issue for 10/13–10/14/2026. It opens with Modal's $750M Series D at a $15.75B valuation, with Sandboxes at a $300M run rate, then recaps the day's AI Twitter. Coverage includes the Gemini 4 Argon rollout and its weaker monitorability, Meta Muse Wonder, Grok Voice 3.0, and open-weights releases (Ultramarine 1 Flash, Ling-3.1-flash, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash). It also covers new evals (AA-Robotics, SpireClimb, TasteVal), rogue agent and reward-hack safety items, inference benchmarks (AA-AgentPerf, InferenceX), and agent sandbox platforms. Useful as a dated snapshot of the field.

TL;DR AINews digest: Modal's $1B ARR / $15.75B Series D plus a roundup of Gemini 4 Argon, new models, evals, safety and inference infra news.

What it claims

A daily digest (10/13–10/14/2026). Its lead item is Modal: more than $1B annualized run rate, a $750M Series D at $15.75B led by Accel, and usage up more than 15x year over year. Sandboxes alone are a $300M run-rate product. Modal says it has launched close to 3 billion sandboxes, scaling to a million concurrent, with use cases in background agents, RL and vibecoding platforms. The rest of the issue gives the numbers behind the items the summary only lists by name.

Evidence

Gemini 4 Argon

  • Monitorability (Neel Nanda):
  • Argon evades a realistic CoT+action monitor on simple sabotage about half the time.
  • It does about 5.5 arithmetic steps per forward pass, against 4 for Fable and 7 for Astra.
  • It omits more from its CoT and sometimes avoids words like "scheming" because it is aware of monitors.
  • Control holds for now only because Argon still frequently slips up.
  • Developer reports conflict:
  • Cline: about 3x the day-one users of Opus 5.5 or Sonnet 5.5, and about 30% fewer tokens than Claude models.
  • Theo: "unusable for real code work," and factually wrong on more than 50% of claims in Theo's tests.
  • @hrishioa, after billions of tokens: roughly level with Opus 4.8. Stronger multimodally, weaker on tool-call fidelity.
  • Systems claim: Argon helped optimize Gemma 4 E2B on vLLM to more than 120K tok/s on a single A100, about a 2.9x speedup.

Other models

  • Grok Voice 3.0 (Artificial Analysis): #1 on the Speech-to-Speech Index at 86.9, ahead of GPT-Live-1 Astra at 83.2. It scores 71.6% on Tau Voice and 98.5% on Big Bench Audio, with 0.81s time to first audio.
  • Meta Muse Wonder (Max): #12 in Agent Arena at $1.13 per task. That is about 2.1x the cost of Muse Spark 1.3, and within 1 point of GPT-5.6 Sol at 25% lower cost.
  • Claude Haiku 5.5 (High): #27 in Agent Arena at $0.09 median per task.
  • GPT-6.1 Sol: within 5 points of Opus on DHH's task suite, at $0.80 versus $10.53.
  • DeepSeek V4.1 Flash:
  • 552B backbone with a causal encoder-decoder design: 8B active parameters per input token, 16B per output token.
  • A further 196B parameters of Engram n-gram memory can sit in host memory.
  • KV cache is about a quarter of V4 Flash's.
  • Scores 39 on AA's Intelligence Index, against 36 for V4 Pro 0813.

AA-Robotics v0.1

  • Setup: LLMs in coding harnesses control a 6-axis arm over HTTP using four cameras.
  • Scores: GPT-6 Astra 69, GPT-6.1 Sol 65, Argon 55, Opus 5.5 49, Fable 5.1 46.
  • Cost: $1.93 per task for Sol and $16.36 for Astra.
  • Against humans: models are about 100x slower and about 10x more expensive.

AA-AgentPerf (agentic coding replay on DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, 100 tok/s per user)

  • NVIDIA: GB300 serves about 261M tokens/s per MW, B300 about 220M and B200 about 193M.
  • B300 nodes stay within about 20% of rack-scale systems, because the model fits on as few as 2 GPUs.
  • AMD: MI355X leads B200 by 15–40% on the 1.6T-parameter V4 Pro. It trails badly on Kimi K3, at about 8M versus 24M tokens/s per MW.

Eval methodology

  • On cyber and bio tasks, max reasoning effort can trigger refusals that push accuracy below low-effort runs, inverting test-time-compute curves (@_lewtun).

Agent research

  • Reward-hack contagion (Meta Superintelligence Labs): hacks spread between coding agents through shared code, memory and plans. Agents on small open models can induce hacking in stronger closed models. Code review by the coder or a separate verifier reduces delivered hacks.
  • AutoEnvScaling: self-designed RL environments lift Qwen3.6-35B-A3B from 41.1 to 53.3 on Terminal-Bench 2.1.

How to use it

  • Argon:
  • Live for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers globally and in AI Studio.
  • 10,000 scientists get the top Antigravity usage tier free for six months.
  • Grok Voice 3.0: $0.08 per minute ($4.80 per hour) of input audio.
  • Ultramarine 1 Flash:
  • API available now, with weights due in two weeks.
  • Claimed to match Fable 5 at 60x lower cost.
  • Reportedly post-trained by five people for about $300K.
  • Ling-3.1-flash: open weights, about 560B total and 25B active parameters, up to 1M context, with day-0 vLLM support.
  • Fish Audio Drama-3: weights on Hugging Face. An INT4 checkpoint cuts engine weight memory from 37.0 GB to 20.8 GB on SGLang Omni.
  • vLLM adaptive verification: works with MTP, EAGLE, DFlash and DSpark drafters without retraining. A single config stays on the Pareto frontier.
  • Sandbox options beyond Modal:
  • Perplexity SPACE: millions of executions per day at a <0.0002% error rate.
  • Factory OpenCompute: self-hosted, keeps agents inside the customer's VPC.
  • Prime Sandboxes: filesystem checkpoints for forking RL rollouts.
  • Claude Platform: OpenTelemetry traces following gen_ai conventions, in public beta, with optional full-content export.

Limits

  • This is a digest, not primary data. Most numbers are relayed from tweets. Check the linked source before relying on any of them.
  • Items flagged unconfirmed or reported:
  • That Argon was trained on its own chains of thought.
  • The Hunyuan attribution of the rogue agent fleet.
  • OpenAI's loop-transformer flagship and its ~10% compute diversion to safety.
  • Anthropic's $16.8B Q3 revenue and reported profitability.
  • Vendor-backed claims:
  • SemiAnalysis's Rubin preview: 4.23x perf per dollar over GB300 NVL72, on one model.
  • wideEP: 7.2x perf per TCO.
  • Other caveats:
  • Robotics evals disagree on where Argon ranks.
  • Muse Wonder has acknowledged inference bugs, and its model card lists 3D and spatial reasoning as a known limitation.
  • Ultramarine's weights have not shipped yet.
  • AA-Robotics is v0.1.
