DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017

Model card for DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017, a minor update to DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash with MIT-licensed weights. It claims gains in reasoning, coding, agentic tasks and visual benchmarks, with shorter task time and output length that move the performance–cost Pareto frontier across agent harnesses (Claude Code for Terminal-Bench 4.0, Mini-SWE-V2 for DeepSWE v1.1). It ships no Jinja chat template. It provides a reference encoding.py for multi-turn chat, tool calling, thinking mode, numeric reasoning effort and interleaved images, plus deepseek-recipe, Rust libraries with Python bindings for prompt encoding and output parsing. Serving recipes are given for Transformers, vLLM, SGLang and Docker Model Runner.

TL;DR DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017: MIT-licensed minor update of DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash with better reasoning, coding, agentic and vision results at lower cost, plus a prompt-encoding toolkit.

What it claims

DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 is a minor update to DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash. The card claims substantial gains in reasoning, coding, agentic and visual benchmarks, with shorter task execution time and output length. The citation names the parent work "DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash: Pushing the Limits of KV Cache Compression" (DeepSeek-AI, 2026), so KV cache compression is the base model's stated focus. The card does not explain the compression method.

How to use it

Weights and repository are MIT-licensed. Transformers exposes the model as an image-text-to-text pipeline or through AutoModelForCausalLM:

from transformers import pipeline
pipe = pipeline("image-text-to-text", model="deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017")
# pip install -U transformers accelerate
from transformers import AutoModelForCausalLM
model = AutoModelForCausalLM.from_pretrained("deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017", device_map="auto")
vllm serve "deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017"
python3 -m sglang.launch_server --model-path "deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017" --host 0.0.0.0 --port 30000
docker model run hf.co/deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017

For local inference without these servers, the card points to the repo's inference folder, which covers weight conversion first.

Prompt formatting matters here. There is no Jinja chat template. The generic serving snippets call the raw /v1/completions endpoint with a plain prompt, so chat, tool-calling and thinking-mode formatting must come from one of two sources:

  • encoding/encoding.py, a self-contained Python reference with test cases. It covers multi-turn chat, tool calls, thinking mode, numeric reasoning effort, mid-conversation system messages and interleaved images.
  • deepseek-recipe, Rust libraries with Python bindings meant for production.

deepseek-recipe accepts Messages, Chat Completions and Responses API requests. It encodes them for both DeepSeek V4 and V4.1, and it parses output back into complete or streamed responses:

flowchart LR
  A[Messages API] --> C[Conversation]
  B[Chat Completions] --> C
  R[Responses API] --> C
  C --> E[Encode: prompt or token IDs]
  E --> M[Inference: caller's job]
  M --> P[Parse: thinking, tool calls, streaming]

Model inference, tool execution and HTTP transport are left to the caller. You still need your own serving stack and tool runner.

Limits

  • No benchmark numbers came through. The fetched text has only the table's footnotes: HLE is the text-only subset, Terminal-Bench 4.0 uses the Claude Code harness, and DeepSWE v1.1 uses the Mini-SWE-V2 harness. Baselines, scores and cost figures are absent, so the improvement claims cannot be checked from this text.
  • Sampling parameters are missing. The "Recommended sampling parameters" heading has no values. The temperature: 0.5 in the serving snippets is Hugging Face boilerplate, not a DeepSeek recommendation.
  • No hardware requirements. The card gives no parameter count, model size or hardware needs.
  • Unclear chat behaviour on servers. The card does not say whether vLLM or SGLang apply DeepSeek's format natively on chat endpoints. Verify this before relying on /v1/chat/completions.
