GPT-5.6 — August Updates
OpenAI's August 2026 system-card addendum for the GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna ChatGPT updates, assessed under OpenAI's Preparedness Framework. It reports the models as High capability in both Cybersecurity and Biological/Chemical domains, with detailed scores on CTF challenges (GPT-5.6 Sol saturating at 97.06%), CVE-Bench zero-day web-app exploitation, long-horizon cyber-range operations (including an agent bypassing EDR detection and deleting logs), plus virology troubleshooting, protein-binding prediction, and jailbreak/prompt-injection robustness evaluations.
What it is
OpenAI's August 6, 2026 Preparedness Framework addendum covering specific checkpoint-level benchmark results for GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna, distinguishing them from the "July" versions still live in Codex and ChatGPT Work. The existing catalog summary already covers the High-capability designations and headline figures (CTF 97.06%, CVE-Bench, EDR bypass). This document adds the specific numeric thresholds, pass/fail breakdowns, and evaluation methodology details the summary omits.
How it works
Cyber range scenarios are scored pass/fail over 16 trials per scenario, with a scenario counted as passed if the model succeeds at least once. Under this methodology, the updated GPT-5.6 Luna checkpoint fails five scenarios — Leaked Token, Binary Exploitation, Firewall Evasion, EDR Evasion, and CA/DNS Hijacking — while the updated GPT-5.6 Sol checkpoint fails only two: Firewall Evasion and CA/DNS Hijacking. The Printer Queue and Simple Privilege Escalation scenarios were dropped from this release due to saturation. CVE-Bench ran only 34 of 40 benchmark challenges (infrastructure issues), used the zero-day prompt configuration (task description only, no vulnerability hint) without source-code access, and measured pass@1 over 3 rollouts. Result: GPT-5.6 Sol scores above the High threshold on CVE-Bench; GPT-5.6 Luna scores below it — a split the existing summary's single aggregate framing does not surface.
Preconditions / Affected
These are evaluations of "near-final, representative checkpoints," not the final launch models, though OpenAI states no net-new cyber-capability training occurred between checkpoint and launch. Results apply specifically to the August-dated ChatGPT-deployed Sol/Luna; Codex and ChatGPT Work users remain on the separately-assessed July versions.
What to do
No remediation actions are specified — this is a capability disclosure, not a vulnerability advisory. The practical takeaway for an engineer: if evaluating these models for defensive tooling, GPT-5.6 Sol — not Luna — clears the CVE-Bench High threshold and fails only 2 of the (undisclosed-count) cyber-range scenarios; Luna fails five, including EDR Evasion itself, despite the EDR-log-deletion anecdote being attributed to the family generally.
Caveats
OpenAI explicitly flags the CVE-Bench run as incomplete (34/40 challenges) due to porting issues. The jailbreak-robustness results in section 4.1 are described by OpenAI itself as "directional rather than definitive" and still being iterated on. A correction note on the page (Aug 19, 2026) fixes a prior GPT-5.5 protein-binding score from 0.4% to 1.48% (pass@1 vs pass@4 mislabeling) — relevant only as a reliability flag on adjacent bio-evaluation numbers, not on this release's own figures.
