EDR: The Great Escape - RomHack Training Review
A DFIR consultant's detailed review of "EDR: The Great Escape," a RomHack training by RETooling's Silvio and Antonio, covering modern EDR/AV internals and evasion across four modules: minifilter driver whitelist/altitude bugs, hooking/unhooking (including VEH syscall triggering), ELAM and PPL, ETW muting via EtwUnregister, ROP-only process injection, kernel notify-routine/object-callback bypass (as implemented in EDRSandBlast), vulnerable driver exploitation for token theft, stack-spoofing techniques (Ekko, gargoyle, SilentMoonwalk, CallStackMasker, DeathSleep), local privilege escalation, memory-scanner evasion (vs moneta, pe-sieve), and .NET IL/JIT-hooking obfuscation (R2R stomping, MassLogger-style tricks). The course used the open-source openedr project as a reference architecture for labs. Written for both red and blue teams, it doubles as a map of concrete EDR blind spots and the tooling attackers use to exploit them.
