What it is

Malwoverview 8.0.5, a GPLv3 Python "first response" triage tool (Alexandre Borges). The existing summary covers its service coverage and features; the page adds a few operational facts that bear on whether you can deploy it in a given environment.

How it works

It acts as a client to existing sandboxes and reputation services — it does not run samples itself. One detail worth knowing: the imphash clustering output uses color as the grouping signal (the second output column), so similar PE/PE+ samples are identified by matching colors rather than a numeric cluster ID. It also detects and optionally extracts PE overlays, and can query/submit APKs pulled directly from connected Android devices.

Preconditions / Affected

  • NDA / handling constraint: By default Malwoverview does not submit samples to any endpoint, so it can be used against confidential samples without leaking them. Submission to VirusTotal, Hybrid Analysis, and Polyswarm happens only via explicit, separate options. This is the key fact for anyone bound by an NDA or handling controlled samples.
  • VirusTotal: Uses VT API v3 only — the v2 options have been removed. If your tooling or key workflow assumed v2, it will not work.
  • Most functions require API keys for the corresponding third-party services.

What to do

No patch or advisory here — this is a tool to adopt, not a vulnerability. If you're evaluating it:

  • Confirm you have keys for the services you actually need; the feature list is broad but each source is independent.
  • If sample confidentiality matters, rely on the default (no-submit) behavior and avoid the explicit submit/download options unless authorized.
  • Note the supporting operational features that make it batch-friendly: SQLite result caching with configurable TTL, JSON/CSV output, HTTP/HTTPS/SOCKS5 proxy support for all requests, and per-namespace compilation when scanning a directory of YARA rules.

Caveats

The page is a capability list, not documentation of limits or reliability; it states no coverage guarantees. VulnCheck access is the Community/Free tier and GreyNoise uses the community API, so results there are more limited than paid tiers. The fetched text is truncated mid-item ("Certificate Transpare…"), so at least one further capability is not fully described.
