Optimizing the SOC

Optimizing the SOC

A blue-team operations guide for optimizing a Microsoft Sentinel/Defender XDR SOC, compiling community-built workbooks and techniques for four problem areas: data collection health (ingestion anomaly detection workbook, KQL-based ingestion-failure alerts, Azure Policy for enforcing DCR association on Arc-managed servers), analytic rule false-positive triage (Bert-Jan's Analytic Rules Efficiency KQL query, referencing Anton Chuvakin's alert fatigue research), MITRE ATT&CK coverage mapping (Sentinel ATT&CK Map, Use Case Mapper workbook), and Logic Apps/playbook health monitoring via the built-in Playbooks health workbook and Azure Monitor alert rules. It's a curated roundup of community solutions rather than original research, aimed at reducing analyst alert fatigue and closing detection gaps.

TL;DR Practical roundup of KQL queries, Sentinel workbooks, and Azure Policy tricks for fixing data-ingestion gaps, alert fatigue, ATT&CK coverage blind spots, and broken Logic Apps playbooks in a Microsoft SOC.
Document

What it is

A practitioner writeup on tuning a Microsoft Unified Security Operations (Sentinel/XDR) SOC. The summary names the three tools; the page carries the concrete specifics the summary compresses away — the actual adapted KQL query, the threshold arithmetic, and the anomaly-detection math behind the workbook.

How it works

The Sentinel Data Collection Health Workbook (from the Content Hub) reports data size, avg size per entry, and events/sec over a chosen window. Its second tab, Data collection anomalies, flags baseline deviations using series decomposition, linear regression, and Tukey's fences — the basis for Sentinel's series anomaly/outlier KQL functions. Thresholds and sampling interval are adjustable. Any chart converts to an alert via the Log Analytics logo (top-right of each chart), opening a Logs blade.

For ingestion-failure alerting, the author adapts Rod Trent's stale-log detection to a custom "no data in N hours" threshold. The threshold is seconds: 60 × 60 × hours. For a 3-hour gap that is 10,800.

What to do

Adapt the stale-ingestion query to your critical table (example uses HuntingBookmark):

HuntingBookmark
| where TimeGenerated > ago(4h)
| summarize last_log = datetime_diff("second",now(), max(TimeGenerated))
| where last_log >= 10800

Then set the analytic rule's Query scheduling parameters to match the window.

For AMA/DCR compliance on Arc-managed servers, use built-in policy definition ef9fe2ce-a588-4edd-829c-6247069dcfdb. You supply parameters: scope (target subscriptions/resource groups) and the required DCR's Resource Id, and enable a remediation task — which creates a system-assigned managed identity to carry out remediation. Review compliance at Azure Policy > Compliance, searching for your definition name, to drill into failed resources and remediation status.

Group related DCR policies (Windows Events, DNS, Syslog) into a single Initiative (e.g. "Arc Managed Server Data Collection"), defining conditions that auto-pull future matching policies into scope.

Caveats

  • The page's stated scope was four issues — Data Collection Health, False-positives, Att&ck Coverage, Playbook Health — but the fetched text ends at the start of the false-positives ("Alerts ….ugh") section. Only Data Collection Health is actually covered here; the other three are named but not addressed.
  • Policy evaluation is trigger-based, not immediate — the author explicitly advises patience before checking the compliance dashboard.
  • Much of the material is aggregated from others' work (notably Rod Trent's article); this is a curation-plus-adaptation writeup, not original tooling.
