Malware Analysis: Analyzing AI-Backed Malware with CAIRN
test
What it is
CAIRN (Cognitive Artifact Intelligence Research Network) is a free research tool from Cisco Talos, published as a GitHub repo, for finding malware that calls out to AI/LLM APIs. It works entirely from VirusTotal metadata โ it never downloads or executes samples. Talos built it after documenting CLOSEDQUORUM, a Windows implant that is reportedly the first publicly documented case of a malware family that lets a panel of commercial LLMs make its tactical C2 decisions (harvesting credentials and crypto wallets) instead of a human operator or a fixed C2 server.
How it works
CAIRN hunts for "cognitive artifacts" โ prompt templates, provider endpoints, API key prefixes, and jailbreak-style text meant to talk an AI sandbox out of flagging a file. It classifies findings into three tiers (simple AI string match โ behavior โ families) and also clusters samples that share no obvious string overlap but are semantically similar. CLOSEDQUORUM itself calls up to four commercial LLM provider endpoints at runtime, substitutes a target value (TARGET: %s) into a prompt template, and deserializes the model's response into a Go struct to decide its next action โ making its C2 traffic blend into normal legitimate API traffic rather than hitting attributable infrastructure.
Preconditions / Affected
Requires a VirusTotal API key (configured via .env) since all lookups are metadata-based through VT. Python environment with pip install -e ".[dev]".
What to do
git clone https://github.com/Cisco-Talos/Cognitive-Artifact-Intelligence-Research-Network.git
cd Cognitive-Artifact-Intelligence-Research-Network
python -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
pip install -e ".[dev]"
cp .env.example .env
# edit .env to add VirusTotal API key
cairn validate-rules
cairn filters
cairn pull --filter python-ai-scripts --limit 10
cairn summarize
cairn explorefilters lists prebuilt VT hunt queries (e.g., Python files referencing LLM libraries or hosted APIs); pull runs one against VT; explore opens the cluster map.
Caveats
Talos and the article both stress CAIRN is a research/hunting tool, not a live threat feed โ it shows where attackers are heading, not a confirmed detection of active campaigns.
