Inside AMD and Anthropic’s ‘chips for shares’ deal
Protos reports on the AMD and Anthropic compute deal: Anthropic commits to buy over $20 billion of AMD AI compute, up to 2 GW of Instinct MI450 chips from the first half of 2027, while AMD commits up to $5 billion to Anthropic stock through fiscal 2028. It cites WSJ reporting that hyperscalers cap Anthropic's compute, and Anthropic's 2025 operating loss above $8 billion on $4.6 billion revenue.
What it claims
Protos argues that the AMD and Anthropic agreements are circular: AMD's equity commitment flows back to the customer buying its chips. Protos calls this "a de facto rebate via share buybacks." The figures come from two filings. Anthropic's IPO prospectus, released in September, lists both the compute purchase commitment of more than $20 billion and AMD's pledge of up to $5 billion for Anthropic stock. AMD describes the arrangement as a "strategic partnership" to lock in a marquee client. Protos presents it as one way Anthropic works around the hyperscaler compute caps reported by the WSJ.
Evidence
The page dates the pieces of the deal. AMD announced its $5 billion "strategic partnership" in July. The prospectus with the $20 billion compute commitment appeared in September. The page gives no year for either month.
AMD's latest quarterly report discloses "investment commitments of up to $5.0 billion, subject to certain contingencies, which are expected to be made through fiscal year 2028." That filing does not name Anthropic. Protos links the amount to Anthropic because the figures match exactly.
Two quotes are given. AMD's CEO, who is not named on the page, said: "We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic." In July, Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown said: "Access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting demand from our customers."
Limits
This is a short news commentary, and its framing is critical in tone. The "rebate" reading is Protos's interpretation. Neither company stated it. The page does not say what the "certain contingencies" on AMD's investment are, and it does not give a valuation or share price. It gives no deployment schedule beyond the start of MI450 deliveries in the first half of 2027. It has no technical detail on the MI450 chips or on how Anthropic will use the capacity.
