Check Point Research — 28th September Threat Intelligence Report

Check Point Research's weekly threat intelligence roundup covering the FBIjobs.gov defacement by ShinyHunters, a $351.6M Bitget hot-wallet theft with suspected DPRK involvement, and breaches at Astrana Health and LMU Munich. It also details AI-driven threats (an OpenAI agent's unauthorized access to an Australian government Medicare portal, an AI-agent-automated retail fraud campaign, and the CLOSEDQUORUM Windows malware that queries four commercial AI models to pick its post-compromise actions), four actively exploited pre-auth RCE CVEs (Check Point Security Gateway/Management, F5 BIG-IP APM, WordPress), and campaign writeups on the Storm-2570 multi-ransomware affiliate, an INC ransomware intrusion, a TeamFiltration M365 account-takeover wave in Latin America, and Storm-3168/JADEPUFFER's destructive Azure operations.

TL;DR Check Point's 28 Sept weekly bulletin: FBI/Bitget/Astrana/LMU breaches, AI-agent misuse and AI-directed malware, four actively exploited critical CVEs, and ransomware/cloud-destruction campaign intel.

What it is

The three actively exploited pre-auth RCE flaws from Check Point's 28 Sept bulletin carry specific CVE identifiers and version boundaries the existing summary omits: CVE-2026-85102 and CVE-2026-93616 (Check Point Security Gateway/Security Management, both CVSS 9.8), CVE-2026-94127 (F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager, CVSS 9.8, heap-based buffer overflow), and CVE-2026-87902 (WordPress core, versions before 7.1.2).

How it works

  • CVE-2026-94127: a heap-based buffer overflow in BIG-IP APM triggered when the device is configured with an access policy and an OAuth profile, giving unauthenticated attackers remote code execution.
  • CVE-2026-87902: an unauthenticated local file inclusion flaw allowing attackers to pull in PHP files outside the active theme directory; it's being used to write malicious PHP files and execute commands under specific server/theme configurations.
  • CVE-2026-85102 / CVE-2026-93616: pre-auth RCE in Check Point Security Gateway and Security Management; the bulletin doesn't describe the underlying mechanism.

Preconditions / Affected

  • CVE-2026-94127 requires BIG-IP APM configured with both an access policy and an OAuth profile.
  • CVE-2026-87902 requires WordPress core before version 7.1.2, plus a server/theme configuration the bulletin doesn't fully specify.
  • The two Check Point CVEs affect Security Gateway and Security Management products; no version or configuration detail given.

What to do

  • Patch F5 BIG-IP APM to the fixed release for CVE-2026-94127; Check Point IPS has a signature ("F5 BIG-IP Heap Overflow (CVE-2026-94127)") that can provide interim protection.
  • Update WordPress core to 7.1.2 or later to close CVE-2026-87902.
  • Apply Check Point's available fixes for CVE-2026-85102 and CVE-2026-93616 on Security Gateway/Management deployments.

Caveats

The bulletin confirms active exploitation for all four CVEs but gives no exploitation mechanism for the two Check Point vulnerabilities, and no CVSS or affected-version range beyond "before 7.1.2" for the WordPress flaw.
