NIST CSWP 36G — False Base Station draft white paper

NIST's National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) released an initial public draft of CSWP 36G, "False Base Station: Applying 5G Cybersecurity and Privacy Capabilities," which evaluates how commercial 5G devices respond to six simulated rogue/fake base station attack scenarios run on NCCoE's operational 5G security testbed. False base stations impersonate legitimate carrier radio access network equipment to intercept traffic, degrade service, or track user location, and the paper identifies gaps in 5G standards and available device-level protections, noting that even 5G's improved security features remain susceptible to denial-of-service attacks. Public comment is open through October 30, 2026.

TL;DR NIST NCCoE draft paper tests how 5G devices withstand six simulated false-base-station attack scenarios and flags remaining DoS weaknesses in 5G security.
