Tamper Sensing Meshes in Payment Terminals and Beyond
Teardown study of tamper sensing meshes (TSM) across a wide range of card payment terminals, ATM key pads and a data center HSM, with detailed photos of critical features. The authors build a taxonomy of mesh construction techniques, find most commercial meshes use simple constructions far from manufacturing limits, and derive a concise set of design patterns. They argue that meshes beating the industrial state of the art are feasible with cheap, readily available processes, giving researchers a basis for realistic test specimens.
TL;DR First comprehensive teardown survey of tamper sensing meshes in payment terminals, ATM key pads and an HSM, with taxonomy and design patterns.
