Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence

OpenAI announces an independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and AI, hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study. Members include Timothy Gowers, Martin Hairer, Edward Witten and Melanie Matchett Wood. The announcement says an internal model begun training on August 28 has resolved the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize problem and more than 100 other open problems. The group is unpaid and can publish its own advice. It will advise on reviewing and communicating results, on academic standards, and on how tools can support mathematical research. The post responds to the open letter "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics", which criticises using open problems as an AI benchmark. It matters as an early example of a lab setting up outside oversight for disclosing AI-driven scientific results.

TL;DR OpenAI sets up an independent, IAS-hosted mathematicians' advisory group to guide how AI-generated math results are reviewed and communicated, after an internal model reportedly solved 100+ open problems.
