The quoted rule allows original games, genre games and games from the user's own designs and assets, but forbids recreating a specific existing game, even if renamed. The post asks whether this ends game rewrites and modding, and gives no verification beyond the quoted text.

Moving use cases onto a Codex harness with skills and plugins removed about 90% of custom code.

Between Spoilers and Guesswork: Avoiding Over-Specification in Coding BenchmarksThis October 2026 arXiv paper studies task over-specification and under-specification in repository-level coding benchmarks. It shows that hints derived from ground truth, as added in SWE-bench Pro, FEA-bench, Doc2Feat-bench and Multi-SWE-bench, leak spoilers in some of them. The authors test several specification levels, recommend techniques for parsimonious hints, and plan to release their hints.

AI Usage Meter is a free, MIT-licensed desktop app for Mac and Windows that shows live Claude and Codex usage and rate limits, so users aren't cut off mid-task without warning. It also tracks API costs and other AI providers. It runs locally and needs no account.

Google Says AI Isn't Building Itself Yet—Even Though It Writes 75% of the CodeDecrypt reports on the Gemini 4 Argon Safety & Security Report, where Google DeepMind found no statistically significant acceleration of ML R&D. Its internal GCI v1 index (123 models, 92 benchmarks) shows steady ~0.1 points/month progress, with Argon slightly above trend, attributed to compute and investment. Over 75% of production code is AI-written and fully delegated pull requests rose from 7.5% to 11.9%, yet ~88% of PRs still need human steering or authorship. This is relevant evidence on the recursive self-improvement debate and on how much of AI research is automated.

More on Anthropic's Scion ripping off MononokeA followup blog post by a former Meta source control team member. They allege that Anthropic's Scion version control system closely mirrors Meta's Mononoke, including the Bonsai changeset data model (a write-ahead-log-style Merkle DAG) and the derived-data indexing framing. They say Anthropic's credit to "Sapling" for "hard-won lessons" is inadequate. The author says the issue is missing attribution, not copying, and that it undercuts the narrative of an LLM building and productionizing the system in 5 months. An update notes that Anthropic responded on Hacker News and added attribution to its blog post.

EveryDev.ai (@EveryDevAi) on Xmagpie, by @yetone, is an open-source local gateway and desktop app that lets any coding agent use any model or provider. It translates between the OpenAI Chat, OpenAI Responses, Anthropic Messages and Gemini APIs. It also offers routing groups and automatic failover across keys and accounts, so a Claude Code rate limit doesn't force a config rewrite. It works with Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Goose, Cursor CLI and Copilot CLI, and backs up its config to a file, WebDAV or S3.

VulnBump: Can AI Agents Fix Vulnerable Dependencies Without Breaking the Build?Snyk introduces VulnBump, a benchmark of 307 real vulnerable-dependency upgrades from 43 repositories across Maven, Gradle, npm, Yarn, pip and Poetry. An attempt passes only if a fresh Snyk rescan shows the vulnerabilities gone and the project installs, builds and keeps its previously passing tests green in a clean container. On Claude Sonnet 5.5, Snyk's Evo Remediation Agent passed 90.2%, Claude Code with Snyk scan and target version 77.5%, unaided Claude Code 59.6%, and a non-AI package-manager bump baseline 46.9%. Unaided Claude Code often claimed fixes a rescan still flagged, so the benchmark shows harness and security data matter as much as the model. The harness and 43 cases are open-sourced.

LaTeX rendererSimon Willison describes using Claude Code (Opus 5.5) to build a browser LaTeX renderer inspired by Tiny Little Office, which stores document data in the URL #fragment and ships an llms.txt so agents can construct document links. He lists the prompts: fragment-hash rendering, a custom compression dictionary for LaTeX, an iframe sandbox against XSS copied from his SVG-in-Markdown tool, and loading from a URL or Gist. The finished tool uses Pako 2.1.0, MathJax 4.1.3, faster-latex 0.3.1 and DOMPurify 3.4.16.

Developer Who Cloned Photoshop With AI Just Did the Same to Microsoft OfficeDecrypt reports that developer Brandon Thomas released WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft, MIT/Apache-2.0 open-source clones of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. They were written in Rust with Anthropic's Claude (Opus 5.5) as a clean-room rebuild and run natively on Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD, and in a browser. Coverage is high (WordCraft 88% of ribbon features, GridCraft 513 of 523 Excel functions), but the authors rate them only about 50–60% ready for real work. Every button is also an MCP command, so agents like Claude can drive the apps. The article is a useful data point on what AI-assisted "vibe coding" can produce in under two weeks, and on where it still falls short (file fidelity, stability).

Anthropic's Scion is heavily inspired by MononokeA former Meta engineer on the Mononoke source control server says Anthropic's description of its new version control system Scion closely mirrors Mononoke's "derived data" design for efficient operations like blame. Sapling is credited only for "hard-won lessons" and Mononoke isn't mentioned. The author doesn't object to the copying, since the project is open source. Their point is that LLMs used to design systems will index heavily on open-source designs in their training data, and that Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra both point to Mononoke when asked about prior art. They argue crediting prior art is now easier and more important.
sunshowers.ioarticlePublished and added 14 Oct 2026- AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary.
Simon Willison's link post points to indie developer Popcar's piece on the recent wave of AI-powered decompilation of existing games. The wave has produced mashups between games and a boom in preservation projects that get old games running on new hardware, often in the browser via WebAssembly. The quoted passages weigh the downside, where anyone can decompile and reuse paid software and companies can copy competitors, against the upside, where people can keep software they bought after servers shut down.
simonwillison.netarticlePublished and added 14 Oct 2026 - Show HN: Graphicle, a Rust port of Graphify with memory for coding agents
Graphicle is a local-first Rust program that parses a repository into a tree-sitter code graph (a port of Graphify) and adds project memory: docs, reviewed decisions and captured Claude Code/Codex sessions. It serves cited file-and-line excerpts within a token budget via one MCP server, CLI and browser app, backed by a single SQLite file, with no API key or telemetry. The README reports a code-only extract on Kubernetes (31k files) in 3m18s versus 26m38s for Graphify 0.9.88, and a memory comparison against seven systems. Agent-proposed memories need user approval and go stale when the code they reference changes.
