Ivanti patches two more Connect Secure zero-days chained in attacks

Ivanti patched two more Connect Secure zero-days, CVE-2026-111357 (privilege escalation) and CVE-2026-118527 (authenticated file upload), chained with authentication bypass CVE-2026-104935 since at least 1 October 2026. Volexity attributed the chain to UTA0576, which ran no malware, re-exploited the device per command and tampered with logs, evading Ivanti's Integrity Checker Tool. CISA added CVE-2026-104935 to KEV, and Shadowserver tracks over 5,000 exposed instances.

Was I wrong about open models & cyber risks?

Interconnects post in which Nathan Lambert revisits his claim that an open-weight Claude Mythos would have been survivable. He argues GLM-5.3 already crosses the capability threshold with little visible societal change, and quotes Rob Wiblin, Anthropic and Zvi Mowshowitz as examples of exaggerated warnings. He cites Epoch AI's Firefox exploit built with GLM-5.3, and treats the recent vulnerability surge as an ecosystem trend driven by AI capability and diffusion, not open versus closed models.

On the Fundamental Limits of Prefill-Based Decoding Length Prediction

This paper derives bounds on predicting an LLM's decode length from prefill-phase hidden states, a primitive for inference scheduling. It models decoding as a stopped stochastic process, giving per-prompt normality and an affine variance law Οƒ=Ξ±ΞΌ+b. Predictors (MLP, EGTP, FiLM, soft-label, Mixture-of-Experts) converge near the bound, so system error dominates model error. It proposes fixing model, data and sampling in benchmarks and reporting relative-error metrics.

This ePrint paper models oscillator-based TRNG phase noise, both white and flicker, as fractional Brownian motion. It proves a quasi-renewal property that gives closed-form worst-case min-entropy and sampling requirements, and extends spectral and Allan-variance analysis so noise parameters come from a single timing trace. FPGA and ASIC experiments show flicker noise accounts for over 99% of uncertainty at a 0.99 min-entropy target, allowing a bitrate two to three orders of magnitude higher.

When Visual Evidence Is Insufficient: How Instructions, Post-Training, and Internal Activations Shape Refusal in Multimodal Language Models

This paper studies how multimodal LLMs refuse questions that an image cannot answer, using the MoHoBench benchmark on three MLLMs. It varies the meaning and placement of refusal instructions, compares supervised and preference-based post-training, and intervenes on a refusal-related activation direction. Instructions change refusal at the sample level in ways aggregate rates hide. Post-training raises refusal most but can mix refusal with attempted answers. Activation intervention gives smaller, transferable changes.

When Algebraic Structure Meets Too Many Hints

"When Algebraic Structure Meets Too Many Hints" is an ePrint paper (2026/2654) arguing that DDGR hint classes and too-many-hints thresholds are not standalone side-channel security metrics. In synthetic Kyber-512 experiments, NTT-domain residues recover the full secret with about half the hints the uniform mod-q bound predicts. Finite-precision FFT samples need 25% to 55% of the budget for uniform perfect hints. No new attack optimizations are proposed.

Thread on two October 2026 npm compromises: @subql/common 5.8.3 (5 October), published through GitHub Actions OIDC Trusted Publishing after the attacker tampered with the publish workflow, and tensorlake 0.5.144 (8 October), published by the project's own release workflow with valid provenance for about 1 hour 40 minutes. Both ran on install and stole cloud, GitHub, Kubernetes, Vault, SSH and .env credentials; tensorlake also took AI tool and MCP config. Its payload installed a gh-token-monitor service that deletes the home directory if the stolen GitHub token is revoked, so remove it before rotating.

Lean verification of EIP-7002: system-call success and FIFO requests

Lean 4 proofs about the 504-byte EIP-7002 withdrawal-request contract on Ethereum, checked against the Jaune EVM semantics for Prague, Osaka, BPO1 and BPO2. The end-of-block system call always succeeds, using at most 210,000 gas. Requests leave in FIFO order. The post also gives counterexamples: code at the system address drains the queue, and the bytecode's 256-bit fee can undercut the EIP's fee.

Stolen AI Reasoning Could Help China Build Cheaper Rivals

Compaction Smuggling is an attack found by Xint that bypassed OpenAI's August 2026 mitigations against stealing reasoning traces from proprietary LLM APIs. It encodes one model's reasoning inside a compaction and replays it to another model (for example gpt-4.1 or gpt-4o), which outputs it verbatim. OpenAI fixed it and paid a $6,000 bounty on 23 October 2026. The article ties it to distillation by Chinese labs, citing a September CISA warning.

953 Online Stores Infected in Long-Lasting Malware Campaign

A SecurityWeek report on a JavaScript loader campaign, tracked by Sansec since July 2025, that has infected 953 online stores, mostly Magento. The actor rotated through five loader domains, the latest being deepveindrilling.com (October 2026) behind Cloudflare, with visitor fingerprinting to hide the payload. Entry points include PolyShell (CVE-2026-48356) and SessionReaper (CVE-2025-54236), and a fully patched store was also infected. Sansec lists cleanup steps.

Clean-label poisoning attack can fool vehicle-network AI without changing labels

Clean-label poisoning attack on federated learning for Basic Safety Message anomaly detection in vehicular networks, from Sagduyu, Erpek, Stephenson and Xue (paper submitted 23 October 2026). The attack perturbs benign samples toward malicious feature extremes without changing labels, which lowers class separability, and it grows stronger with more compromised nodes. A feature-consistency relabeling defense keeps attack success low without hurting clean accuracy, and a game-theoretic model shifts equilibria against attacking.

Non-profiled Single-Trace ML-DSA Secret Key Recovery by Horizontal Distribution Analysis

Non-profiled single-trace side-channel attack on ML-DSA-65 (Dilithium) running on ARM Cortex-M4, by Linus Backlund and Elena Dubrova (KTH). It compares observed sample distributions with expected Hamming weight leakage using a Gaussian mixture model, and stacks partitioned trace segments for multiple observations. Information-set decoding corrects misclassifications; with a 2^70 enumeration budget, the full secret key is recovered from one trace in 99% of attacks, using secret key unpacking as the attack point.

Subexponential Algorithms for LWE via Rejection Sampling on Superlattices

Subexponential Algorithms for LWE via Rejection Sampling on Superlattices is an ePrint paper by Ligeng Fan, Changpeng Shao, Hongbo Li and Dingkang Wang. It extends the Ducas, Engelberts and Loyer superlattice framework to give a provable classical search-LWE algorithm for prime q in [n^2, 2n^2], using m=4n samples and time and space exp(O(n/ln ln n)). A second variant runs in 2^((1/2+o(1))n/ln R) for general parameters. It resolves a gap left by Kirchner and Fouque.

Gheist is a GitHub campaign disclosed by Wiz in October 2026. Stolen tokens push ci-sync-XXXXXX branches with a sync-check workflow that dumps repo secrets base32-encoded to evade log masking, fetches the logs via API, then deletes the run. 13,500+ branches and 850+ accounts were hit since 15 September. Public repos are protected by the approval hold; private and Enterprise repos are not. The thread lists IOCs (.gdmp_pat files, "gheist" user agent, "ci: sync config" commits) and rotation steps.

Decision Attacks on Known-Covariance Ring-LWE via Public Gram Determinants

Anis Bkakria's ePrint 2026/2638 gives polynomial-time decision attacks on Known-Covariance Ring-LWE (KCov-RLWE), the assumption Micciancio and Suhl introduced for simulation-secure threshold encryption. The public sample and covariance hint form a bordered Gram matrix whose determinant leaks a residual that differs between real and uniform samples. The attacks cover broad prime-modulus families at ring rank one and transfer to composite moduli with an odd prime divisor. Power-of-two moduli are not covered, and the paper does not break the full threshold-encryption scheme.

Gheist: Attempted Scaled Abuse of Stolen GitHub Tokens Stumbles

Gheist is a campaign tracked by Wiz Research since 15 September 2026 that uses stolen GitHub tokens to push a sync-check workflow on ci-sync-* branches in every reachable repository. The workflow prints base32-encoded secrets into logs, which the tool downloads through the GitHub API and then deletes. Over 13,500 branches from 850+ accounts were recovered. The post covers the two tool variants, a buggy self-hosted runner payload, GitHub's approval hold (which does not cover private repositories), overlaps with other campaigns, hunting queries, IOCs and hardening steps.

A hash-only rollup: OP Stack L2 accounts as Lamport-style hash chains, no ECDSA inside the L2

Hash-only rollup: an OP Stack L2 (chain ID 42069000, live since 30 September 2026) where accounts are keccak-256 hash chains and transactions carry no signatures. Spending uses a commit-reveal step through two new transaction types in op-geth. The post describes a flaw the authors found: unauthenticated commits could be overwritten, which allowed preimage front-running. It was fixed with a first-commit-wins rule on 21 October 2026. It lists the remaining limits: L1 ECDSA, no fault proofs, a centralized sequencer, 160-bit addresses and wallet desync.

Intervention-Certified Amplification: A Validity Gate for $Οƒ$-Weighted Post-Training

Intervention-Certified Amplification (ICA) is a validity gate for sigma-weighted hybrid SFT/RL post-training. The paper shows that DIAA, a per-sample sigma-weighted hybrid, emits unexecuted tool-integrated reasoning on 29% of MATH-500 prompts (three times vanilla GRPO) even with Python fences removed from its anchor. ICA gates sigma with paired-rollout evidence, cutting TIR to 13.8% (frozen) and 11.2% (online) and raising accuracy from 47.5% to 48.7% and 49.3%. It transfers to GSM8K.

Abusing Linux fanotify for Anti-Forensics

Abusing Linux fanotify for anti-forensics: a privileged userspace process can use the fanotify API to deny other processes the right to open an otherwise normal file. Reads fail with EPERM even for root, while name, ownership, timestamps and permissions look ordinary, so a scanner that cannot open a file may report no detections without inspecting it. Defenders can find malicious fanotify groups and marks via /proc/<pid>/fdinfo, or acquire at the filesystem level instead of opening the pathname.
