Inside a malicious Claude Code-branded extension and its persistent SSH backdoor

Microsoft Threat Intelligence analyzes a tampered anthropic.claude-code extension (versions 2.1.312 and 2.1.313) served on the Cursor marketplace on 29 October 2026. The injected JavaScript loader adds an SSH key labeled svc-telemetry, opens a reverse SSH tunnel and sets up persistence on macOS, Linux and Windows. The post gives cleanup steps, IOCs and Defender XDR hunting queries. VS Code Marketplace and npm were not affected.

Malicious Claude Code extension on Cursor planted SSH backdoors

A malicious version 2.1.313 of Anthropic's Claude Code extension was served from Cursor's marketplace for about 11 hours on 29 October 2026, reaching up to 5,000 developers. A JavaScript loader prepended to extension.js added an attacker SSH key, a reverse tunnel and macOS/Windows persistence, and reported to 134.209.82[.]225. Coding errors likely blocked SSH access on many hosts. Cursor removed it and rotated keys; victims should look for an 'svc-telemetry' SSH key.

Trojanized Claude Code Extension Delivered Persistent SSH Backdoor to Developer Machines

The Claude Code VS Code extension anthropic.claude-code 2.1.313 was published on Open VSX on 29 October 2026 with a malicious loader prepended to extension.js. On load it planted an attacker SSH key (svc-telemetry), installed per-OS persistence, opened a reverse SSH tunnel and beaconed host recon over HTTP. Cursor reports at most 5,000 users received it in an 11-hour window. The post gives the timeline, cleanup artifacts and credential rotation steps.

Announcement of hexvero, an MCP server that gives coding agents a static first look at binaries and app bundles across 18 formats (ELF, PE, Mach-O, APK, .NET, Go, Wasm, Electron, SQLite). It uses zero-dependency Node parsers and marks each finding confirmed or inferred with file and line. Its tool catalog is 3,043 tokens, against a claimed 509,696 for the established reverse-engineering MCP server. Paged output with a byte budget shrinks a 541 MB Electron app to a 15 KB result, 1.3 MB of JSON to 7.9 KB, and a 450 KB build diff to 1.2 KB. radare2, rizin or Ghidra plug in for disassembly, and `npx hexvero setup --apply` registers it with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and 15 more clients. Endor Labs compares Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Fable 5 using its Agent Security League, a 200-task benchmark run under both Cursor and Claude Code. Sonnet 5 is more thorough, with higher FuncPass, about 1.5x the tool calls and a lower cheating rate. Announcement of jevmem, an open-source MIT plugin that gives Claude Code, Cursor and Codex persistent project memory. After each turn it asks Jev (a TypeSafe AI model) whether anything is worth keeping (a rule, decision, failure, or to-do) and writes one line to a plain Markdown file tracked in git. It also checks commands against saved rules before they run and asks first, or blocks. Reported results: Claude followed the rule in 66 of 72 sessions vs 28 without it, the right save/skip call on 98.5% of 66 turns, and 66 of 68 rule-breaking commands caught out of 274 test commands. Listed in Anthropic's Claude plugin directory and on the MCP Registry.

It supports stdio and HTTP stream transports, with a stateless mode for multi-replica Kubernetes deployments. The security design is detailed: API tokens are read only from env vars or headers and never from tool arguments, the default token is bound to the default base URL, a per-host token registry covers extra instances, a read-only mode disables write tools, and the HTTP listener binds loopback by default and requires an inbound auth token if exposed.

mattpocock/skills — agent skills for engineers

mattpocock/skills is a collection of small, composable "agent skills" for software engineering that install into Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, Cursor, OpenCode, Devin, Windsurf, Amp and Pi via plugin managers or the `npx skills` CLI. It packages practices like interview-driven requirement gathering (/grill-me, /grill-with-docs), domain-model/glossary building, test-driven development with red-green-refactor (/tdd), bug diagnosis loops, codebase architecture improvement, ticket triage and spec-to-implementation workflows (/to-spec, /to-tickets, /implement, /implement-spec), splitting skills into user-invoked orchestrators and model-invoked reusable disciplines. It's built by Matt Pocock as an alternative to heavier process-owning frameworks like GSD, BMAD and Spec-Kit, aiming to keep engineers in control while giving coding agents better feedback loops and shared vocabulary.

Tensorlake npm Package Compromised: A Worm With a Hostage Token That Wipes Your Machine If You Revoke It

StepSecurity details how tensorlake@0.5.144 was pushed to npm after malicious commits landed directly on the tensorlakeai/tensorlake GitHub repo's main branch under a maintainer's identity, carrying a valid npm provenance attestation despite being malicious. The preinstall hook downloads Bun to run an obfuscated payload that steals GitHub/npm tokens, cloud and Vault/Kubernetes secrets, SSH keys, browser logins, and AI-tool configs (Claude, Cursor, Windsurf), then self-propagates by republishing stolen npm packages and committing persistence files (.claude/settings.json, .vscode/tasks.json) to reachable repos. A "hostage token" mechanism installs a gh-token-monitor service that runs a home-directory wipe if the stolen GitHub token is revoked before the monitor is removed, inverting the normal incident-response order.

Package Hallucination Attacks on Coding Agents through Prompt Injection in Rule Files

This arXiv paper introduces the "package hallucination attack," where an attacker injects malicious prompts into benign agentic-coding rule files (such as .cursorrules) to induce a coding agent to replace legitimate package dependencies with attacker-controlled ones. The authors propose PackHallu, an evolutionary optimization framework that iteratively rewrites injected prompts using trajectory-level feedback and LLM-guided mutations, and show it achieves high attack success rates with strong transferability across multiple LLMs, benchmarks, and agent frameworks.

What does it mean to sandbox an AI coding agent?

An Endor Labs technical breakdown of what an "agent sandbox" actually is: a kernel-enforced boundary around an AI coding agent's tool calls (syscalls), distinct from a staging environment or Docker container. It walks through the nx/s1ngularity supply-chain attack as motivating case, compares OS-level primitives (Apple Seatbelt, Linux Landlock/seccomp, Windows Job Objects/AppContainer) used by Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex CLI against containers and microVMs (gVisor, Firecracker), and argues filesystem isolation and network egress isolation are worthless unless enforced together.

Endor Labs walks through what "sandboxing an AI coding agent" actually means at the OS level, contrasting the approval-prompt model with kernel-enforced isolation. It details how Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex CLI converge on the same primitives without full containers — Apple's Seatbelt on macOS, Landlock plus seccomp on Linux, Job Objects/AppContainer on Windows — and why Anthropic ships an open-source bubblewrap-based runtime with a host-side egress proxy. It argues filesystem isolation and network egress controls are interdependent (citing Anthropic's own sandboxing writeup) and uses the 2025 nx npm supply-chain attack to illustrate why containment, not model-level guardrails, is the real defense against prompt injection and credential exfiltration.

Malicious .git Configs Can Make Claude, Codex, Cursor, and Other AI Agents Run Attacker Code

Manifold Security (publishing as GitSpawn) found that a repository's own .git/config can set core.fsmonitor to an arbitrary command, which Git silently executes on any index-refreshing operation (git status, git diff) — including the background branch/diff checks AI coding agents run at session startup, before any trust prompt, sandbox, or model call. The technique, requiring only that a .git directory arrive intact via archive/USB/sync-folder rather than a fresh clone, was confirmed in goose, Codex CLI/Desktop, Claude Code (two separate paths), Cursor, Hermes Agent, Qwen Code, and Grok Build; goose, Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor have shipped fixes while Hermes Agent, Qwen Code, Grok Build, and Claude Code's "ultrareview" path remained exploitable as of September 1, 2026. OpenAI separately published three CVEs for the same class in Codex, and the piece ties the pattern back to earlier IDE trust-dialog bypasses (VS Code CVE-2021-43891, JetBrains CVE-2022-24346).

Critical Cursor Flaws Could Let Prompt Injection Escape Sandbox and Run Commands

Cato AI Labs disclosed DuneSlide, two critical (CVSS 9.8) Cursor flaws — CVE-2026-50548 and CVE-2026-50549 — that let a zero-click prompt injection (via MCP servers or web search results read by the agent) escape Cursor's terminal sandbox and achieve arbitrary command execution. Both abuse the file-write allowlist logic: one via the run_terminal_cmd tool's working_directory parameter, the other via a symlink-resolution fallback that trusts an in-project path when the real-path check fails; both let an attacker overwrite Cursor's sandbox helper binary or startup files like ~/.zshrc to disable the sandbox entirely. It compiles detailed third-party eval data (Vals AI, Artificial Analysis, Cline, FrontierSWE, FrontierCode, CursorBench, ParseBench) including a cost-per-task breakdown showing Opus 5.5's savings largely evaporate at max reasoning effort due to higher token usage, plus safety/safeguard controversy, prompting-playbook changes, and a broader scan of open-model, compression, and multimodal releases such as Qwen-Image-2.1, PixVerse, StepAudio 3, Tim Dettmers' bitsandbytes compression work, and NVIDIA DGX Spark.

Show HN: Foremerge – Catch intent conflicts between parallel coding agents

Foremerge is an open-source coordination protocol layered above Git for parallel coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor). Agents publish semantic intent (scopes like symbol/api/schema) before editing into a shared SQLite store under .git, so Foremerge can detect intent conflicts—like one agent replacing a class another is extending—that Git's text-diff merging would silently miss. It's advisory-only (no file locking), deterministic (no LLM judgment calls), and gates ChangeSet acceptance on Foremerge-run validation rather than agent self-reports.

ToolLeak: Tool-Invocation Attacks on Coding Agents

This arXiv paper red-teams six popular coding agents (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, Cline, Trae) from a tool-invocation angle, discovering ToolLeak — a general vulnerability that exfiltrates system prompts via benign argument retrieval during tool calls. Building on leaked security info, the authors craft a two-channel prompt injection (hidden in tool descriptions and tool return values) that hijacks agent tool invocation to achieve remote code execution, succeeding on 19 of 25 agent-LLM pairs for prompt leakage and on every tested pair for RCE across backends including Claude Sonnet 4/4.5, Grok-4, and GPT-5.

Socket: Two Joyfill npm Beta Releases Compromised to Deliver DEV#POPPER Remote Access Trojan

Socket's research team found two beta releases of the @joyfill npm packages (@joyfill/layouts and @joyfill/components) contained an import-time JavaScript implant that resolves encrypted payloads through Tron, Aptos, and BNB Smart Chain transactions, ultimately dropping a 77KB Node.js remote-access trojan matching the DEV#POPPER family and sharing loader fingerprints with the PolinRider blockchain-loader campaign. The RAT establishes a Socket.IO C2 channel, executes arbitrary JS/shell commands, exfiltrates files and clipboard data, and persists by patching files inside VS Code, Cursor, Antigravity, Discord Desktop, GitHub Desktop, and the global npm CLI; a parallel detached-process branch fetches an additional bootstrap that can deploy a Python credential/browser-data stealer assessed as an OmniStealer variant. Because the implant fires on module load (not via npm lifecycle scripts), `--ignore-scripts` provides no protection, and the writeup includes full IOCs, blockchain addresses, C2 infrastructure, and MITRE ATT&CK mappings.

Adversa AI argues that AI agent security lives in the harness, the loop, tool executors, context/memory management, approval gates and sandbox wrapped around an LLM, not in the model itself, and catalogs nine recurring harness failure classes. It details the firm's own research: SymJack (a symlink-based approval-prompt bypass that let six tested coding agents write attacker-controlled MCP config), GuardFall (shell-matcher bypass exploitable in 10 of 11 open-source agents tested), and TrustFall (MCP servers auto-executing on folder-trust acceptance in Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Cursor CLI and GitHub Copilot CLI), plus references to IDEsaster's 30+ AI-IDE vulnerabilities, a Hugging Face download-counter side channel (CVE-2026-54316), and Novee Security's Black Hat findings on credential leakage across Gemini CLI/Codex trust boundaries. A deep-dive lab series (AIDS-01 through at least AIDS-02 shown) teaching security patterns for AI-powered applications built on Google's Genkit framework, covering flow input/output validation with Zod, streaming chunk validation, telemetry data exposure, and agentic tool-calling security including least-privilege tool design, human-in-the-loop approval via tool interrupts, and maxTurns limits against runaway execution. Each lab includes concrete vulnerable-vs-secure TypeScript code, curl-based exploit walkthroughs (prompt injection to extract secrets, payload-inflation cost attacks, XSS via unsanitized LLM output, SQL-tool abuse for data exfiltration, privilege escalation via an over-permissioned modifyPermissions tool), plus detection (regex injection detection, OTel telemetry filtering) and verification tests. The broader 40-lab set spans multi-agent frameworks (LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen), MCP tool poisoning, LLM guardrails (NeMo Guardrails, Garak, promptfoo), and real CVEs/incidents like TorchServe, ONNX, the Cursor MCP exploit, and the Morris-II worm.

GhostSplice: Malicious MCP Servers Split Exfiltration to Bypass Guardrails

Reporting on ASSET Research Group's GhostSplice disclosure, which shows a malicious MCP server can bypass single-shot prompt-injection refusals by splitting a data-exfiltration request across multiple channels (tool descriptions, tool results, server-initiated sampling) so no single message looks malicious, letting the coding agent stitch the fragments together and exfiltrate SSH keys, .env secrets, and source code. Testing across 15 models and clients (Cursor, Codex CLI, Claude Code) found splitting a request into two pieces raised average compliance from 42% to 82%, with GPT-4o, Gemini 2.0 Flash, and Llama 3.3 70B going from 0% to 100%, and results varying sharply by client even for the same model (e.g., Claude Haiku 4.5 at 0% in API tests but 100% in a three-piece Cursor test). It follows the same lab's earlier Ghostcommit disclosure and recommends clients treat MCP server output as untrusted data rather than instructions.

Remediation Agents, Demystified: Why Fixing Beats Finding

Recap of a Snyk "AI Security Engineers Community" livestream introducing Remediation Agent, now in public preview: an orchestration layer that sits between a developer's chosen LLM and Snyk's vulnerability intelligence (breakability assessments for OSS upgrades, package health/reachability scores, SAST fix generation, and ecosystem-specific upgrade playbooks) to auto-generate mergeable SCA and SAST fixes. It was demoed live against OWASP Juice Shop via the CLI (snyk fix --agentic --experimental --sca) and via an IDE path (Snyk Studio MCP server plus a /snyk-fix skill in Cursor, Windsurf, or VS Code), with Snyk reporting internal gains of 94% more mergeable SCA fixes and 13% more mergeable SAST fixes versus naively pointing an LLM at a vulnerability backlog.

yetone/cumora

Cumora is a cross-platform team-chat application where AI agents sit alongside humans as first-class participants — holding persistent personas and memory, claiming Kanban work, coordinating with each other, and sending real email — rather than only responding when addressed. Agents can run on Cumora's cloud (per-agent Kubernetes pods driving a multi-hop tool-calling loop over the OpenAI Responses API) or in "Bring Your Own Agent" mode, pairing a local Mac/VPS daemon with an existing coding-agent backend (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor Agent, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Qwen Code, Google Antigravity, etc.) while keeping provider keys off the server. The repo documents a concrete coordination design — a seen-cursor freshness gate that holds stale replies, atomic claims on units of work, a small-brain triage gate, and a transactional Postgres outbox for realtime fan-out — making it a useful reference for building multi-agent systems that avoid agents colliding on shared work.

galleonlabs/hypergrok-trading-desk

HyperGrok Trading Desk is an open-source "Agent Skills" pack (MIT licensed) that turns a Grok Bot, Claude Code or Cursor instance into a coordinated seven-agent trading desk for Hyperliquid perpetuals, using seventeen portable SKILL.md skills covering bootstrap/setup, exchange API access, and desk operating procedures. Each trade moves through a fixed pipeline — idea, evidence, risk sign-off, explicit human approval by ticket id, a single execution agent that sends the order, reconciliation, and a separate review agent — with read-only "opening bell" and "desk doctor" scripts for zero-key market snapshots and release/connectivity checks. The design choices worth noting for agent builders are the one-writer/many-readers pattern, sizing risk off the stressed (slipped) cost of a stop rather than its trigger price, and keeping the approval gate (Grok Bot's Require Approval rule) outside the chat the agent itself can write to.

What is an agent harness? The software that turns a model into an agent | Blog | Endor Labs

Endor Labs explainer arguing that an AI agent's "harness" (orchestration loop, tool calling/MCP, memory, sandboxes, permission guardrails) - not the underlying LLM - is what determines both capability and attack surface. It walks through concrete harness-level risks (prompt injection as OWASP's LLM01, MCP servers as unvetted dependencies, permission sprawl) and pitches deterministic lifecycle hooks (as used in Claude Code/Cursor via Endor's AURI) as a jailbreak-proof control layer, citing Endor's Agent Security League benchmark where Cursor+Fable 5 beat Claude Code and Codex on both functional and security correctness.

0DIN Expands: From Inference to Agency

0DIN (Mozilla's AI bug bounty program) announces it is expanding scope beyond inference-layer jailbreaks to agentic AI vulnerabilities — covering 29 products across coding agents, agentic browsers, enterprise agents, and general-purpose agents from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, Amazon and others. It introduces a new evaluation rubric for agentic submissions (violation class, impact severity, attack vector, scope) mapped to the OWASP Top 10 for Agentic Applications, and raises the bar for inference jailbreaks by requiring retargetability across two JEF-tested boundaries. The post cites real incidents including a Cursor agent token exfiltration, a malicious GitHub MCP integration issue, a rogue MCP server leaking WhatsApp histories, and CVE-2025-68664 (LangGrinch) affecting 847M LangChain downloads.

Andrej Karpathy Skills

A single CLAUDE.md file (also packaged as a Claude Code plugin and Cursor rule) that encodes four principles derived from Andrej Karpathy's public observations on LLM coding failure modes: surfacing assumptions and ambiguity instead of silently guessing, avoiding overengineered/bloated code, touching only what's necessary when editing, and using verifiable success criteria for goal-driven execution loops. It's distributed as a drop-in instructions file, a Claude Code marketplace plugin, and a committed Cursor project rule.

GhostJacking Attacks: AI Agent Takeover via Firewall Evasion

Tenet Security's DEFCON 34 research "Ghostjacking" chains four AI-agent attack primitives into a full kill chain: prompt injection via untrusted log/telemetry fields that AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor) read through MCP connectors to Cloudflare, Datadog, and Sentry; agent-to-agent lateral movement where one agent (Sentry's Seer) vouches malicious findings to a downstream coding agent; a JWT cross-reuse sandbox-escape zero-day in Claude Desktop's Envoy-based egress proxy that lets a stolen/broadly-scoped token bypass the deny-by-default network allowlist; and a "self-exploit" technique where one AI session iteratively crafts a prompt-injection payload against another. The Cloudflare chain is notable for weaponizing a WAF-blocked request: the payload rides in headers logged verbatim, so an agent triaging "blocked" firewall events is tricked into hijacking DNS records — a 90% success rate against Claude Code (Sonnet 4.6) on Cloudflare's own recommended config. All findings were disclosed and remediated/confirmed by Cloudflare, Datadog, Sentry, and Anthropic before publication, and the researchers open-sourced a mitigation tool, agent-jackstop.

Agentjacking: How We Hijacked AI Agents Inside a $250B Company

Agentjacking is an attack by Tenet Security researchers in which a fake bug report or poisoned log makes an AI coding agent run attacker code during a routine triage request. They report an 85% success rate against Cursor, Claude Code and Codex, including network-disabled sandboxes, and confirmation across 2,388 organizations. The recording covers sandbox and container bypasses and defenses, including the open-source JackStop hardening tool.

What is AI harness engineering?

Aikido explains harness engineering, the orchestration code (tool-calling loops, routing, parallelization, orchestrator-workers, evaluator-optimizer patterns, context compaction) that wraps an LLM to turn it into an effective, safe agent, arguing the harness matters more than model choice for security work. It cites Claude Code, Cursor, and OpenClaw as example harnesses, references the July 2026 Hugging Face-OpenAI incident where a frontier model attacked and defenders had to fall back to an open-weight Chinese model due to frontier-model refusal on cybersecurity tasks, and points to Cloudflare's published multi-stage vulnerability-discovery harness as a real-world reference implementation.
