Alpine Linux rebuilds GitLab after attempted RCE attackAlpine Linux rebuilt its GitLab server and reset all passwords after attackers tried to exploit CVE-2026-97229, a maximum-severity integer overflow in the Onigmo regex engine bundled with Ruby, on October 20-21. Eight worker crashes occurred and four were partially successful. Missing logs and outbound connection records meant compromise could not be ruled out. Alpine had run GitLab 19.3.4, then 19.3.6, which lacked the Ruby patch; the fixed image is alpinelinux/gitlab:19.3.6 with Ruby 3.3.13.

Satoshi-era bitcoin faces a bigger quantum threat after Google’s new Willow breakthroughCoinDesk reports Google's Science paper showing its Willow chip prepares "magic states" with about 40x fewer errors (about 99.99% fidelity, but only about 8% of attempts survive post-selection) using a method called cultivation. It explains why this lowers one hardware bottleneck for a Shor's-algorithm attack on Bitcoin's ECDSA keys, but does not make an attack 40x cheaper. It also separates coins with permanently exposed public keys (early Satoshi-era outputs, which an offline attacker can target) from hash-hidden keys, where the attacker must race the spend. The article cites Google's March estimate of under 500,000 physical qubits and about 500,000 reliable magic states per second for a roughly nine-minute attack.

Supermarket refrigeration hack hit 700 French stores, with fridges reaching 50°CReports the 12 October 2026 compromise of internet-exposed Danfoss (AK-SM800, AK-SC355) and Dixell/Copeland refrigeration controllers. It hit an estimated 700 French stores and sites in five other European countries. Attackers forced defrost mode, spoiling food and in some cases starting electrical fires. Root causes were a firmware-derived daily "code-of-the-day" password that worked across all deployed units, end-of-life firmware, and no VPN or IP allowlisting. Pen Test Partners and Claroty Team82 recommend removing controllers from the public internet, VPN plus allowlist access, credential changes, current firmware, and controlled third-party access.

GitHub’s model for secret detection: Finding more secrets with less noiseGitHub describes replacing an LLM-based generic secret detection pipeline with a two-stage system. High-recall regex generates candidates, then a fine-tuned ModernBERT classifier scores each one using its file path, secret type, variable names and surrounding context. Training data mixes product feedback, weak-labelled regex candidates and synthetic hard negatives, with splits grouped by repository, value or example. The model is exported to ONNX with 8-bit quantization. Reported results against the LLM pipeline: 13% higher precision, 19% higher recall, 11.5% higher owner-weighted acceptance in an A/B test, 86% lower median post-push scan time and over 98% lower serving cost. It is a concrete case for using a small fine-tuned encoder instead of an LLM on a narrow, measurable classification task.
